While some small businesses have yet to proceed much beyond the most basic tips for going green – swapping out light bulbs for high-efficiency versions or cutting paper use and waste – some have gone far beyond that point and are applying creativity.

The Fairchester Green Building Council was formed last January in an effort to make sustainable real estate increasingly mainstream, and already has 700 members. It is one of several groups maintaining web sites to provide tips on environmental steps businesses can take, which also include CT Green Scene, multiple state agencies, Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating Co.

Fairchester Green Building Council has held events throughout the year, including the May tour of a green home in Armonk, N.Y., and an upcoming event at Merritt 7 Office Park in Norwalk on achieving the federal Energy Star designation.

Merritt 7 recently completed an Energy Star benchmarking analysis, implementing changes in energy usage to improve a score for all six buildings to an Energy Star rating of 97 out of a possible 100.

That puts it in the top 10 percent of all commercial buildings for energy efficiency nationwide.

The Norwalk event, held in conjunction with the Southern Connecticut Building Owners and Managers Association, is part of a broader campaign to facilitate Energy Star benchmarking for commercial buildings across Fairfield County and Westchester County.
