One formula for success in business is to provide customers with something that is not easily obtained elsewhere. That is the locally driven formula for success used by the weekly Friday farmers market in downtown Poughkeepsie, where the salad greens feature fresh arugula and a diverse mix of talent celebrates the city.
Special events that run every second Friday at Mural Park on Main Street just east of Market Street kicked off June 19 with Kid’s Day.
The next Main Event on July 10 at noon is titled “City Heart & Soul Celebration!” with musical, spoken word and dance acts. August will feature Latino-themed music; September will bring swing music and promote local artists. The second Friday in October will be Green Day afternoon with vendors, speakers and music related to environmental awareness. There are cooking demonstrations scheduled, as well.
“It’s a nice mix,” said Steve Hopkins, the market manager, saying the Main Event programs in that sense resembles the Poughkeepsie area itself, with a mix of IBMers and blue-collar workers and a melting pot of ethnic backgrounds, many of whom interact in the blocks around the Mural Park. Key sites ranging from the county courthouse to the historic Bardavon Theater to Civic Center to the Poughkeepsie Grand hotel are all within easy walking distance.
