When President Obama came to Troy last month to highlight the fact community colleges are leaders in green energy and sustainability, at least four other college presidents in the Hudson Valley could legitimately say they are ahead of the curve.
The presidents of community colleges from Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties met at a technical studio in Kingston last week in the seven21 Media Center to tout their progressive programs in renewable energy and green educational initiatives both as individual institutions and as a group.
William Richards of Orange Community College, Cliff Wood of Rockland Community College and Donald Kaat of Ulster Community College were joined by Ellen Galligan, vice president of academic and student affairs at Sullivan Community College, a last minute pinch hitter for Sullivan President Mamie Howard-Golladay.
They addressed a breakfast meeting of about 50 freelance techies, some of whom use facilities in the seven21 building. The gathering was hosted by the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation and concerned green initiatives in alternative energy. They represented four of the 30 community colleges in the SUNY system.
