Queen of plasticine

As publishers scale back operations, heads are rolling at newspapers and magazines nationwide.

And, as go art directors, so go artists.

The plight of picky art directors is closely tied to the livelihoods of freelance illustrators, photographers and sculptors, many of whom live on life’s edge from paycheck to paycheck – often putting work ahead of well-being.

With the publishing world in tumult, artists turn to the Internet and its social communities to ferret out assignments.
Being behind on rent is a major inducement to find work, wherever in the world.

In a small cottage along a dirt road in the farmlands northeast of Pine Plains, Karen Caldicott holds court with celebrities looking on. She even has the heads of state in the palm of her hand.

From such disparate individuals as Mick Jagger and Sarah Palin to Tina Fey and Kofi Annan, all have been recreated in plasticine by Caldicott’s hands.

The non-drying clay has served her well.

For the 12 months of 2006, she had one of her creations in each issue of New York magazine.

“It lasted the whole year,” the diminutive sculptor’s face brightening as she says it.

“Each model for each week had to be shown in seven or eight different poses. Being in plasticine it was perfect because it doesn’t harden. The idea was they were out on the town; seeing art shows or going to restaurants,” she said. “That was the best job I ever had.”

But the art director left and that was the end of it.

The same thing happened to her several years earlier.
