There are 20 Medicaid-managed care plans in New York state. Hudson Valley Health Plan, based in Tarrytown, ranked No. 1 by the state Department of Health, receiving its 2009 Quality Incentive Program recognition.
Georgeanne Chapin, CEO and president of the nonprofit, said in a prepared statement, “Hudson’s top ranking underscores the professionalism of its health care providers and the hard work and dedication every member of the staff performs daily.”
Hudson Health Plan provides comprehensive medical and dental coverage to more than 90,000 members of the mid-Hudson Valley region. It has earned the highest ratings in overall satisfaction among Medicaid managed-care programs every year since 2003.
The plan also has been recognized for its service by several organizations, among them the Case Management Society of America 2007 Award for Excellence in Adherence Management and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Corporate Award for Diversity from the YMCA of White Plains and Central Westchester in 2005.
In addition to its Medicaid managed care program, Hudson Health Plan offers Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus to the uninsured or underinsured.
Hudson Health Plan serves seven counties: Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Ulster. Many of Hudson Health Plan’s representatives use outreach vehicles to get to clients with no public transportation available.
Laurene Sandstrom, a Hudson Health Plan senior representative who travels to Dutchess and Orange counties, is “a great believer in every child having coverage and in getting the word out to people that this is not just for people who have lost their jobs, but for those who are employed and can’t afford health care premiums for their children.
“Since it works on a sliding scale, it has saved many parents from making painful decisions, like ‘Should we pay the doctor bill and not the gas and electric company?’” she said. “The recession has hit everyone, and these are tough economic times. There’s no shame in needing a hand up.”
(Editor’s note: Sandstrom was featured in HV Biz’s “Profits and Passions” in November 2009.)
