The term top-40 connotes achievement for hit songs and also for smart business people. So the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce has awarded its top-40 to those entrepreneurs who have not yet turned 40, as a way of celebrating youth and business savvy.
The “40 Under 40” celebration was held at the Poughkeepsie Civic Center on March 9 at a crowded dinner where each of the 40 honorees was awarded an engraved silver martini shaker to denote his or her achievements.
More than 100 nominations were received and winnowed to the 40 winners. The selection committee reviewed and evaluated nominees based on achievement, experience and innovation, vision, leadership and community involvement.
“The public needs to know about those young movers and shakers of the business community who are making successful strides in their businesses while significantly helping to shape our community,” said Ann Meagher, president and CEO of the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce.
“I think that it is really important to celebrate talent, innovation and the future of the Hudson Valley,” Meagher said. “In these difficult economic times this is particularly important to do. These individuals represent innovation and business success. They are the real deal.”
“It’s an honor, but I haven’t thought much about it,” said Stephen Adams, 37, a co-owner of Adams Fairacre Farms, with outlets in Newburgh and Kingston as well as a store in Poughkeepsie. “The people who know me kind of laugh. I’m not into that kind of thing. It is flattering that they put me up for the award and that I won. I didn’t even know about it until I got a phone call telling me I had been selected.”
He said that when he looks down the road at the business, he sees the road to success as essentially continuing what has worked thus far. “We have to continue doing what we’re doing. We still have to help the community that’s a no-brainer. If someone comes to us and needs something we can provide, we will try and provide it.”
