Blythedale Children’s Hospital officials this month were joined by elected officials in Westchester to break ground on a $63.5 million modernization project designed to better meet the special needs of both patients and their families at the 118-year-old institution in Valhalla.

The project, much of it funded by philanthropy, is the first major renovation in nearly 40 years at Blythedale, the only independent, free-standing children’s rehabilitation hospital in the state. There patients with complex medical and rehabilitative needs are directly referred from neonatal and pediatric intensive care units at major medical centers across the tri-state area.

Designed to address what Blythedale Children’s Hospital President and CEO called “dramatic changes” in the hospital’s patient population and their medical conditions and care requirements, especially in the last decade, the construction project includes an 86-bed, two-story, 55,760-square-foot inpatient care wing with larger private and semi-private patient rooms to accommodate high-tech equipment and parents spending nights there. All rooms will have piped-in oxygen for patients with respiratory problems, “the number-one diagnosis” at Blythedale, said Levine.
A modernized lobby and entryway also are included in the design by project architect MorrisSwitzer Environments for Health Inc., based in Williston, Vt. Construction manager for the project is the New York office of Bovis Lend Lease LMB Inc., whose recent projects include the new New York Mets stadium, Citi Field.
