Family Service Society of Yonkers (FSSY) has received $200,000 in funding from the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corp. to provide residential modifications for eligible disabled and elderly residents throughout Westchester County.
FSSY applied for $400,000 in federal funding through the Access to Home program and though the organization received half of the applied amount, the next round of funding could come within the year.
The organization first began modifications about four years ago through a home accessibility program supervised by Yonkers’ Department of Planning and Community Development, said Helen Frankel, director of adult services and protection program, FSSY.
“The city of Yonkers recognized how efficient the program was and expanded it,” Frankel said. “Afterward, Westchester County recognized the need to modify homes for people with disabilities and the elderly, making funds available through a source called the weatherization program.”
The county Department of Social Services oversees the weatherization program, which Frankel said, “allows us to leverage funds and do projects related to energy efficiency and accessibility.”
