Joblessness in the Empire State last month was lower than the national average of 6.1 percent, also a 1.5 percent jump from a year earlier. The national jobless rate in July was 6 percent. In New York City, August unemployment was 5.9 percent, up from 5.4 percent in July and 5.3 percent in August 2007.
Unemployment in August either rose slightly or held steady from July throughout the lower Hudson Valley, while the entire region saw significant increases in jobless rates from a year earlier.
In Putnam County, August unemployment was 4.7 percent, compared to 4.6 percent in July and 3.2 percent in August 2007. In Rockland County, the August jobless rate was 5.2 percent, compared to 5.1 percent in July and 3.9 percent in August 2007.
In the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown market, unemployment was 5.5 percent in August, up from 5.4 percent in July and 3.9 percent in August 2007. Within that regional market, Dutchess County’s summer unemployment was unchanged from July to August at 5.3 percent. The county, however, had the largest year-to-year jobless increase in the region, 1.6 percent.
In Orange County, August unemployment also was unchanged from July at 5.6 percent but up from 4.2 percent in August 2007.
Statewide, the number of private and public nonfarm jobs increased by 39,700, or 0.5 percent, and the number of private sector jobs increased by 32,500, or 0.4 percent, according to Labor Department officials. Nationally, the number of nonfarm jobs last month decreased by 0.3 percent and the number of private sector jobs decreased by 0.6 percent from August 2007.
In the Putnam-Rockland-Westchester region, the number of nonfarm jobs has increased by 4,100, or 0.7 percent, since August 2007. Of those, 3,200 jobs were added in the private sector, an increase of 0.7 percent.
In the Kingston labor market, the number of nonfarm jobs last month increased by 100, or 0.2 percent from August 2007. There were 200 fewer private-sector jobs over the same period, a 0.4 percent decrease.
In the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown region, the number of nonfarm jobs increased by 700, or 0.3 percent, from August 2007. The private-sector job count was up 200 for the same period, a 0.1 percent increase.
